Situated in the very heart of the Rheingau region the family owned winery Fritz Allendorf looks back to a century long tradition of wine making. Open minded and with a modern approach owner Ulrich Allendorf produces beautiful Riesling and Pinot Noir wines that focus on the unique regional character of the Rheingau.
Therefore he is always interested in new developments in oenology. He is the first wine grower in Germany to plant commercial quantities of Red Riesling (Roter Riesling). The Red Riesling is considered to be one of the original forms of the Riesling grape.
In Allendorf's opinion, the red color of the berries is a guarantee that the Red Riesling will retain the typical varietal characteristics of the Riesling even if the average annual temperature continues to rise. Autumn 2008 the first harvest is planned.
In 2006 the winery received the highest award of the federal state of Hessen, the state prize for Best Winery in the Rheingau. Ulrich Allendorf is very thankful for this acknowledgement of the intense and enthusiastic work of the employees and the family members.
Winery Formation: Established
by Pilipp Anton von Allendorf in 1773.
Ownership: Ulrich Allendorf and Christel Schönleber inherited the estate from their father Fritz Allendorf. Fritz Allendorf continually extended the original 5 acres to its nowadays impressive size of 150 acres. Today the estate is the largest family owned winery in the Rheingau.
Managing Director: Ulrich Allendorf
Location: The estate Allendorf is located in the small village of Winkel, Rheingau and owns parcels in the most prestigious sites for Riesling and Pinot Noir accordingly.
VdP: Fritz Allendorf is member of the German Association for high Quality wines.
Climate: Continental, with warm summers and mild winters and lower precipitation. The river Rhein reflects the sun during the day and warms at night. The Rheingau is protected against northern winds by the Taunus mountain range.
Soil types at the sites:
Winkeler Jesuitengarten
Deep calcareous loess soil, a south facing parcel (65 acres): elegant fruity Riesling with a crisp acidity as a guarantee for ageworthyness
Winkeler Hasensprung
Deep loess soil and surface gravel with tertiary ocean sand, mixed with loess, loam and clay: masculine, full-bodied Riesling with an expressive acidity.
Assmannshäuser Höllenberg
Deep quartzite and slate: earthy and rich Pinot Noir with a slight undertone of almonds.
For Allendorf, environmental responsibility is important, thus the winery has a very simple but efficient philosophy concerning the use of fertilizers and plant protection products: less is more. Intense quality assurance and yield reduction are the keys to optimal growing the grapes.
The Riesling grapes are cool fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Carefully selected yeasts along with extended yeast contact during the vinification process enhance the characteristics of this grape varietal. All Pinot Noir wines are aged in oak barrels, the high end Quercus line is always aged in new American and German oak.
